Dear All

I just heard the sad news of the death of Steve Jobs. What an absolute visionary he was, his philosophy to dream big changed the way nearly every one of us communicates.

I remember being convinced to cross over from my old phone (which will remain dignified and unnamed) to an iPhone. To me at the time all I needed was a phone that worked and enabled me to get online...how wrong I was. I spend more time on my iPhone playing around, creating and learning that I have on any phone I have ever owned. The iPhone has changed the way I communicate in the fashion industry. As a creative person I love using technology which is extremely visual and tactile, which is exciting and engaging. And yes, the iPhone offers all of that to me.... not to mention the apps! I keep high resolution images of my upcoming collection on my phone which I can flick through when I meet a person of interest, we can bump phones and share contacts, I have never found sharing, saving and editing software so easy and so portable.

I am able to sort my contacts by events, use apps which remind me what I wore where and because of my busy schedule find the ease with which I can save important dates in my diary with the relevant multimedia attachments perfect. Every fashionista I know has an iPhone except for a small number, you kind of feel part of the in-crowd by phone carrying alone ;-) I have also got into the habit of saving pictures with each contact so that I do not lose sight of who does what!

In the fashion industry you meet so many people at one event, it's hard to rely on making notes on the business cards...here is my entry for stylist Anne Look!

Steve - we all have so much to thank you for and what a legacy you have left behind.

David Downton's blog

Dear Friends,

I am super excited to see that artist David Downton, Fashion Artist in Residence at Claridge's has illustrated the highlights of London Fashion Week for VOGUE UK. The man is a genius! Take a look at his interpretation of one of my favourite fashion week shows - Matthew Williamson.

I have Downton's book 'Masters of Illustration', he is a case study in my forthcoming book and I am a huge fan having him met a few times in London and loving his work. Carmen Dell'Orefice recently said of David 'Every artist is suggesting part of themselves – it's not just about me – and I could show you some of the worst drawings of me by great artists. David could draw me as a crochety 80-year-old, because I'm sure she lives in here too, but he's a romantic, looking to find the best in everything.'

He is one of my favourite fashion illustrators. There is a great resource if you are interested in learning more about fashion illustration and some of the talented ones in the group here.

If you love Downton and live in London then you will love the fact that the London College of Fashion will celebrate Dell'Orefice's contribution to the fashion industry with an exhibition curated by Downton in November. Downton is currently fashion artist in residence at Claridge's.

London Fashion Week Vs New York Fashion Week

Dear All,

I just completed a mammoth run of New York Fashion Week Vs London Fashion Week and having had some great chats with friends both sides of the pond I wanted to comment on the NYFW Vs LFW commentary!

I found New York to be consistently surprising - the style I saw there was polished and head to toe details - bare minimum was polished hair, pedi and mani and ridiculously fantastic shoe game - then came the clothes consideration - polished and perfect well thought out and with a key branded accesory (shoe, bag or belt), to the point where conversations with friends stopped (ahem Bev) as our heads turned to take in what we were seeing. I saw feminine and floating, chic and sophisticated and statement bold - both on the runway and on the seats.

New York Fashion Week Style

The runway shows I managed to see included Jenny Packham (I know she doesn't count as she is a British girl), Carolina Herrera and Narcisco Rodriguez. My friend Isabel, a native New Yorker born and bred, explained that New York is where the big money is spent, hence a label detail of some sort is a prerequisite for completing an otherwise lesser known branded look - do you agree? From NY I took away transitional fashion - which can cross over from a day to evening look with ease.

Whereas New York appeared more wearable in London I was blown away by the fashion forward statements particularly at the London Fashion Week shows, such as at Mark Fast, Vivienne Westwood and Holly Futon. Here you are more likely to see big fashion risks - both on the runway - as demonstrated by Mark Fast's gold tasselled jumpsuit - across to out and about around the venue where the bright blue hair, red eye lashes coupled with a gold jumpsuit against the backdrop of a cheery Somerset House will just work. As will the skinny black jeans, pumps and layered top look (as mastered by Sienna Miller effortlessly).

In my opinion this is perfect as it means both fashion weeks fill a very disctinct and unique space which makes the developing rift between the fashion weeks a little worrying. I love Carole White's comments on the developing situation - in many ways London Fashion Week is being bullied by the larger more 'commercial' fashion weeks and could end up squeezed out - what do you think? I would love your thoughts? Where do you stand on the New York Fashion Week Vs London Fashion Week experience?

What Suzy Cameron taught me...

Dear All,

I just wanted to share some thoughts about what LA taught me in this recent trip! I got back last week and despite trouble adjusting to the time zones I am getting there. It was an insane trip and has only caused my excitement for Red Carpet Green Dress to build up. With the Oscars as the chosen event and collaborations on the horizon with the likes of Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver and Jessica Alba it is snowballing and uphill.

I am excited and putting it out to the universe that I am going to make sure this it the best Red Carpet Green Dress the red carpet has ever seen. I also interviewed Suzy Cameron whilst out there and learnt so much about her life and how she sees fashion, her personal style and some funny stories about her life with Jim and her time working on Titanic.

It was insightful because I expected to her to list of a reel of favourite fashion brands the likes of whom often grace the catwalks every fashion week to star-studded front rows instead she explained her preference for quality over label name with favourite brands being Old Navy, GAP and J Crew. I expected to hear about the entourage of glamazons who prepped and preened her for her numerous red carpet events (when Avatar launched she was on red carpet roll for over a year and a half) – instead she told me about doing her own makeup and keeping it simple. She just reminded me that even when you reach the pinnacle of Hollywood, you don't have to get swept away in it.

You will be able to read the interview yourself when it goes live through a very cool and exclusive platform to be revealed but I must say it reminded of how honoured I am that she chose a British girl from London to run her red carpet Oscar campaign!

Loving Los Angeles

Dear All

Sending love from LA! I am over here working on the Red Carpet Green Dress role and the weather and vibe is amazing! Next week I will be taking to the Academy with Suzy Cameron, very excited and can't wait to get the wheels moving for the competition. We are definitely going to do something magical with it.

I am also working on my dress collection and things are coming along well, you never know what the outcome will be but the toiles are looking good with 2 weeks or so left until I need to present them to a department store. FINGERS CROSSED! I forgot how stressful creating a collection can be but luckily the Thai Yoga is going to be a great way for me to unwind more often :-) Plus, there is nothing else I would like to do!

Very excited, I was just featured on VOGUE again (second time this year) so check it out!

The Fashion Business Club (FBC) rebranded as The Industry launched today at Swarovski CRYSTALLIZED™. Multiple award-winning British singer and songwriter, Kate Nash was The Industry’s guest, interviewed by top London fashion stylist, Rebekah Roy, renowned globally for her work across editorial, catwalk and music.

Kate was a bundle of energy, very truthful and direct and it was a refreshing woman to hear being interviewed who spoke so candidly about confidence, inner beauty and the impact the female musicians have on young women and their esteem. She had some great perspective about being a woman in the music industry and sticking to her guns when it came to personal convictions about her personal style.

We sipped champagne and mingled in a buzzing environment, lots of creative, talented and inspiring people sharing stories, advice and contacts. Past events have seen us being inspired and educated by the likes of retailer Yasmin Sewell, blogger Liberty London Girl and Vogue.com Editor Dolly Jones.

Protect your designs - ACID member and proud

Dear All,

I wanted to share this update - I am now officially member of ACID. I hope that all of the designers amongst us who read my blog will consider joining up to an organisation like this to protect their creative work as much as possible.

Anti-Copying in Design is a membership organisation, committed to raising awareness and encouraging respect for intellectual property within corporate social responsibility. The ACID logo is recognised as a strong symbol of deterrence and I will be putting it up on my website. You can also put it on your sketches and illustrations and any work you are sharing with others as part of the creative process.

As a member I am entitled to services which help protect my designs (the age-old sending it to yourself recorded delivery is not a proven method and no longer cuts it). I have access to the legal services of a City law firm and access to a design bank where I can upload my designs and from that time and date they are registered with ACID.

Being part of an organisation like ACID gives me much more confidence when it comes to having to share my designs (for example with my manufacturing team). I am also very excited as ACID have also kindly provided some great content for my upcoming book!

I wanted to share some updates with you about my comings-and-goings! I am currently busy working on my new Red Carpet Green Dress role, my collection (Finally) and doing interviews and shoots which is fun. I am definitely trying to embrace all of the fun filed things that are happening right now even though it is all moving quite quickly!

Creative downtime

Dear All,
It has been a manic few weeks, between LA and London, starting a new role for the Camerons, getting the funding for my clothing label, working on my book...it's quite a long list! I am also doing some research and reading about Erin O'Connor's model sanctuary for my book. The sanctuary is basically a place where models facing the fast paced schedule of international fashion weeks can relax and recharge and seek unbiased advice in a private space from a diverse team of professionals. I got to thinking that designer's need their own sanctuary too. This year I am trying to balance the fun work and demanding schedule with 'treat time' and good wind downs. In LA I ate better than I do in London, organic, vegan you name it. I also drank so much water and the benefits of the sun go without mentioning. In London although I can't rely on the sunny forecast I can still eat well and get my excercise in plus the relaxation fixes I need.

With that in mind I went for my first ever Thai Yoga Massage. In case you have never heard of this ( I hadn't either) it is an ancient healing art that stimulates the energy in the body through applied pressure points massage. For me I wanted to feel relaxed and find a way to nurture my body with a gentle treatment. This was ideal as combined with gentle yoga stretches it was a very natural process and left me feeling both rejuvinated and completely relaxed, to the point of falling sleep on the way home! Perfect, total physical and mental relaxation. It's worth treating yourself or doing something like this regularly because as a fashion designer or creative who also works on the business side of things I know that staring at the computer screen for hours is really not good for your health. Plus, life isnt all about work! And as much as I love to mix work and play this was 100% play!

I am looking for fashion photos from the London College of Fashion!

Dear All,

I am looking for street style images, fashion editorial images and any image that represents the fashion industry in photographic form from students or alumni of the London College of Fashion. The images will be published in my book early next year. The book, whose title will be revealed later this year, will be a fashion business resource and lifestyle book providing a comprehensive overview of the global fashion industry combined with an overview of the creative process and lifestyle of a fashion entrepreneur.

Contributors to the book include Harold Tillman (Chairman of the British Fashion Council), Sarah Curran (Founder of mywardrobe.com), Nigel Barker (America’s Next Top Model), Frances Corner (Dean of the London College of Fashion), Suzy Cameron, The Industry Founder Courtney Blackman and stylist Anne Look.

These images can come from Fashion Photography students, designers (i.e. pictures of their collections) or any other creative work from the London College of Fashion. The aim is to help get your work seen and if a photo really stands out it may become the cover of my book! These could be photo shoot images, street style, studio or atelier photos, any images you feel describe the fashion industry from your perspective as a designer, photographer, stylist,...the list goes on.

I want to include work by students from the London College of Fashion as I believe that LCF is such an exciting hub for talent and raw creative energy, and I wanted to give these talents an opportunity for their work to be published. When I started out I was working with my network from day one. When I couldn’t afford a really expensive photographer I worked with emerging photographers who were more fleixble with price and would ensure that they had a name credit. I did everything I could to ensure that their work were seen and published. Every little bit helps when you are trying to get your work seen and out there. Photographers will be fully credited in my book and will see their work in print, for some photographers this may be their first piece of published work.

WGSN Global Fashion Awards Shortlist party..fresh off the plane

Dear All,

I'm back in London, fresh off the plane from LA and buzzing from a magical time. Lots of exciting news to share as a result of that trip but first things first. I attended the WGSN Global Fashion Awards Shortlist Party at the beautiful St Martins Lane. The shortlist for the second annual WGSN Global Fashion Awards was announced with some of my favourite brands and retailers being included. Liberty (my fave department store) was shortlisted for Outstanding Customer Experience, my-wardrobe.com (founded by the lovely Sarah Curran) has been shortlisted for Best E-Tailer and for Most Sustainable Brand - Prophetik. Great shortlist! PLUS two students from my favourite fashion college LCF have been shortlisted for Most Creative Student Collection.

Also in attendance were Susanna Kempe (CEO of WGSN), Courtney Blackman, Rebekah Roy (whose outfit was so much fun), Harold Tilman, Chris Beales (who taught me some of the fundamentals of pattern cutting when I was shortlisted for Project Catwalk 3 years ago) and many others.

It was a great re-introduction to the London Fashion scene and a fun evening.

I will share some of the LA news when I am fully recovered but one of the highlights was my friend Birgit's Emmy Party, she got yet another nominated for her stunning work on 'The Bold and The Beautiful'!

Farewell to London for now...London College of Fashion BA Show

Dear All,

What a way to trot off to LA! As you know I am off to LA to start my new role as Global Campaign Director for Red Carpet Green Dress. I am super excited and also of course nervous! Let's see what this trip holds! I'll have 4 days of training and then I'm off on a road trip from Malibu to San Francisco!

But before that I was invited to present the BA Fashion Design Collection of the Year at the London College of Fashion. LCF is my favourite fashion college in London and I have worked with them for a few years now through guest lecturing spots and mentoring.

Before the show

The Dean of London College of Fashion, Frances Corner, has also kindly provided some great content for my book.I was totally flawed and completely honoured to be asked to do this, I even had to give a little speech beforehand!

The BA show was absolutely amazing!!! Streaming live through the LCF website we saw designer after designer ( 25 to be exact) showcase their BA collections to a packed audience which included my favourite illustrator David Downton, Jo Wood, the Clothes Whisperer and others. I was interviewed by the college about my thoughts and opinions of LCF as a fashion college and the design talent we saw being showcased.

After I presented the award 'Collection of the year' award to winning designer 'Nova Chiu', an adorable and talented designer who charmed the crowd with her petite nature. In high spirits we shimmied on to the after party and celebrated the success of some exciting and emerging design talents.

It was incredible to see one of the students I mentored take home the 'Innovative use of textiles' award! I was sooooo proud! :-)

I spoke with David Downton who I have met a few times and whose London book launch I attended last year. Such a lovely man!

Why do we create?

Dear All,

As many of you know I have an exciting new role which will see me working between LA and London this year. In addition I am committed to launching a womenswear collection and finishing my guide book. As exciting as these projects are I was also a little dare I say it nervous about the big direction my life seems to be taking me in, but then I was reminded of what this actually means by this beautiful quote, "There is a big life is waiting out there for all of us - we just have to be brave enough to seek it."

I was reminded of the reason...the 'Why' I wanted to do these things in the first place.....there were about creativity, connecting with people, sharing my talent, identifying a talent in others, using my gifts, being inspired, inspiring others, the list goes on! And the platform that social media presents to share your art with the world is unrivaled....one that artists and creatives of olden times such as the Ziryab's of the world could only have dreamt of. The internet is perhaps the greatest gift of the 21st century to artists and creatives.

Why do we create? Some of the reasons I believe are.....

To speak another language

To feel connected

To touch people

To feel something

To leave something behind

For approval and acceptance

Tracey Emin: More than her art

Dear All,

This weekend was a good one and on Sunday I passed through the Tracey Emin exhibition alongside heaps of other art-lovers and some just inquisitve folk. The exhibition features works on theme with romance, love, lust and longing...several pieces made me laugh out loud. Actually the exhibition is very personal and relies on the viewer finding something in it they can relate to. I had two favourite rooms (art that made me feel something in one way or another) - Blankets ( a room featuring hanging blankets appliquéd with letters and texts which showcase her memories, thought and feelings through some poignant and moving times in her life) and the vibrant Neon Lights ( a corridor where she has used neon to illuminate thoughts, feelings and ideas against a black backdrop)..."You forgot to kiss my soul".

This Neon sign was my favourite one and I also loved her reprisal of the scream in Neon which took me some time to spot.

I think it is worth seeing this exhibition for yourself to form your own opinion so I won't go into detail about them. I would say that although I loved parts of it for the moments of realisation they gave me I left the exhibition more intrigued with the woman than her art.

The only con was that I did find it slightly repetitive, perhaps she didn't need to have the entire gallery space as some of the art felt like space-fillers.

I also left wondering about her personal style and the relationship between an artist and how they dress...looking through images of her it seems she has an effortless approach to dressing which is still quite provocative. She is quite a full figured women and tends to dress to accentuate her figure, with plunging necklines and cinched in waists (a perfect Vivienne Westwood girl actually), flashes of a lace bra... very querky and very unpredictable...much like her art.

Needless to say I will be checking out the Louis Vuitton exhibition in her honour to see what the luxury brand's take is on this fiesty woman.

My conclusion? Tracey Emin > More than her art....

Mixing celebrations and pleasure

Dear All,

Over the years I have learnt how to mix business and pleasure quite well and fresh off the heels of news of my LA job I wanted to catch up with some friends and celebrate. It just so happened that my favourite department store of all time (Liberty) was having an evening of shopping and champagne with Richard Nicoll so we headed over there and toasted what will be a beautiful and fulfilling year...for business, pleasure and love. I always want to spend time with my friends and get invites to some really fun events so I have got into the habit of combining the two...it's always better that way and much more fun!

There was a great atmosphere...lots of fun-fashion-loving people, a DJ spinning some fun tunes and Henry Holland made an appearance.

On a side note we then headed to Vapiano (a must go for anyone after a good night out) and we enjoyed my favourite...Rucola Ravioli...DELISH! There is something about watching your food being prepared that makes it taste even better...lol!

Art lovers...have you passed through Somerset House? If you have not had the chance try to as there is a beautiful exhibition by Ai WeiWei called ' Circle of Animals / Zodiac Heads'. The monumental installation comprises of 12 bronze animal heads, re-creations of the traditional Chinese zodiac sculptures which once adorned the fountain of Yuanming Yuan, an imperial retreat in Beijing. I spent some time with my statue (after I finally located it!). It's such a beautiful space to sit, relax and reflect.

I think I will finish my book here, you can get alot done in the courtyard when the sun is out x

It has been an inspired few days and please check out my Facebook for an exciting update! This week I was very excited to see a lady I have known since 2005 (the days of Face of Asia) launch her womenswear brand in UAE. It made me feel quite touched and also start to look forward to some new dress designs of my own!

The reason for this post was because I wanted to share something. I am actually tickled by this video, a friend shared it with me and I think it is beautiful.... I love the description the photographer uses for all the models and artists he is shooting...'It's like a Fashion Zoo'...that got me ticking with ideas for a collection and I can relate to his feeling. When I have worked on shoots with models and see their different looks and personalities I can see where he got the term 'Fashion Zoo' from.

The back story to the video is that Kiko Mizuhara is shooting the second issue of limited-edition Tokyo-based style magazine The Reality Show and director Kensui Arao filmed the behind-the-scenes shenanigans as Nobuyoshi Araki captured the models...I think everyone who watches this video will have a favourite model, I am drawn to Kaori and Nakao (a little naughty)...

The quote at the end got me thinking too..."Fashion essentially determines ones life", I don't fully agree...in a sense your fashion style makes a statement about who you are which can influence how people interact with you but to say that fashion essentially determines life...feels like a leap...if he had said "Fashion is my life" that may make more sense as intense fashion-lovers may often feel that way. I would love more clarity on what that actually means...Anyway it's a great website to bookmark...http://www.nowness.com

Appreciating Red Carpet Fashion....fashion's poems

I just flicked onto Vogue.com and was confronted with this stunning red dress! Beautiful cut, lush fabrics and the model was cast to perfection! More inspiration! I love the statement that a red dress makes on the carpet and the one and only Elie Saab has a knack for bringing an elevated level of style and unique design to red carpet design. The glimpse of skin on the legs is subtle and sexy.....

Big sigh.....this just makes me want to disappear into a room full of fabrics and not emerge for a few hours!

I took a trip down memory lane this week after a friend sent me the link to my Wikipedia and it reminded me of some of the other things I used to do. Ahead of sharing some big news with you I wanted to share this first. As some of you know I used to write poetry, spoken word, sing and perform around London. This was one of the reasons I got into fashion design, because I used to perform in pieces I had made and loved to look unique. This possibly spans from me growing up with a mum who would make me dresses for the school disco! Well, I have started writing again more and more and I have shared one of my recent poems here for you to enjoy :-)

Philip Levine's Headism Launch and The W Hotel London

An absolutely amazing night was had yesterday! Straight into it after the long relaxing easter break I attended the launch of Philip Levine's cool exhibition Headism near Goodge Street. I met him around 2006, he is hard to miss due to his colourful headwear!

It's great to see how far he has come and how well he is doing! Philip uses his head as his creative canvas, adorning it with everything from Swarovski crystals to paint to coffee beans!

If you have free time I recommend you pass through the NL Dutch Cultural Pop Up Sace in Riding House Street to check it out.

I caught up with fashion stylist Anne Look and my counterpart Courtney Blackman of Forward PR too.

We then danced on to W Hotel for my friend Nicola's fabulous night Wyld Wednesdays which kicked off recently and saw the likes of Skin from Skunk Anansie and Florence (Florence and the Machine), the hotel was also home to Vogue for it's 15th birthday.

The W Hotel is around the world, famously starting in New York in the late 90's. I love the hotel, it fuses art and fashion so well with some quirky features and is a great place to meet with fashion minded people, creatives and art-lovers. It simply sparkles.

My Met Gala favourites!

Dear All,

I had to post because I have loved seeing the beautiful dresses at this years Met Gala as I am gearing up with my own designs and for fashion week in September, there were some truly beautiful designs on the red carpet/stairs with my hands-down favourite being Blake Lively in Givenchy.

She looked every inch the goddess and embodied everything I have always believed red carpet fashion for women should be...beautiful, flattering, feminine and slightly edgy...highlighting and complimenting their strongest features.

Red Carpet magic...I love it! Any woman who has ever walked a red carpet knows how amazing it feels when the dress is right and you feel comfortable. My friend Isabel was there and told me Blake owned the night with confidence...the sure sign that a dress has hit the sweet spot. I have a red carpet event in July so I was taking notes!

I also really loved Zoe Saldana in a canary yellow Calvin Klein (she is one of the women I have my heart set on dressing for this year > http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=175220115842273), it was a little simple for the occasion I thought but the colour looked sensational on her skin tone.

I loved the tribute paid to McQueen by the likes of Gisele Bundchen, Sarah Jessica Parker and Salma Hayek who was my second favourite of the night. From the Royal Wedding to the obvious London high street fashion influence to the Met Gala, Alexander McQueen's name (and hence Sarah Burton) was on the lips of many.

Earth 2.0, trying something new

I was lucky enough to be invited to attend the Earth 2.0 Screening at the Apollo Cinema, Piccadilly recently and it was such an enjoyable experience! Earth 2.0 Initialization, the first in a series of promotional films features six presenters including Melissa Sterry and Dr. Rachel Armstrong who discuss challenging

topics and issues around the issues of sustainability...a word I define as meaning 'how can we make what we have last and appreciate it's value?'

I was invited by the lovely Melissa Sterry who I have known since 2007 when I was fashion editor of the Talent Magazine, Melissa contributed some great content and we have been in touch ever since.

I would never have thought that this would be as enjoyable for me as it was as I do not work in that area at all (obviously..lol) but the short film explained how we can fuse science fact with science fiction to present futuristic sustainability ideologies and technologies at the leading edge of innovation, in other words...I got to glimpse into the future possibilities which translates to the fashion industry and textiles ...and that is always exciting!

I wore a dress by the amazing Ekaterina Kukhareva to the premiere, I have worn her brand a lot recently and it is one of my favourites during London Fashion Week. She is a Central Saint Martin’s graduate who specialises in making magical knitwear pieces.

I love the lightweight feel of her dresses, the form fitting structure and the very wearable colour palette. She also has amazing skills when it comes to fringing, crochet and macramé. BoBelle Launch and Vivienne Westwood party

Dear All,

Thank you for supporting my Facebook page and checking in with those updates! I wanted to do a posting about some of the events I have attended, firstly a fun launch I attended which was hosted by fellow 'Red Magazine' girl Claire Watt-Smith (Claire was named as one of Red magazine's 'Red Hot Women under 30' for 2010, you can see my recent selection for the 2011 list here).

Held in her cute boutique behind Marble Arch on New Quebec Street the evening was a champagne and canapé toast to the achievements of this bag and purse designer ( I loved the artwork decorating her store, beautiful and feminine, it was a really girly store).

For her launch she wore a beautiful Vivienne Westwood Anglomania dress and by chance I recently attended the Vivienne Westwood store party: Vivienne Westwood: A New Season, which was great fun. In advance of the Royal Ascot Fashion Show, and in association with the Directors of Ascot Racecourse, Vivienne Westwood invited a few fashion lovers to her flagship store on Conduit Street for a unique view of her Spring/Summer 2011 collection.

The Anglomania (a term coined in 18th century France to describe the style of all things English) by Vivienne Westwood range is so popular, understandably so as it is wearable whilst also being high fashion and sitting in a reasonable price bracket. Popularly referred to as being 'clothing for heroes' I do love this range, it allows women to own a piece of Vivienne Westwood that can be worn on a regular basis versus being a one off show-stopping piece.

I have won the Red Carpet Green Dress competition!!!!

The amazing Rankin party @ National Portrait Gallery

Dear All,

Friday was the throwdown to beat all throwdowns! That National Portrait Gallery held an amazing event called Late Shift Extra : Snapped. It was an evening curated by All Walks Beyond the Catwalk which celebrated fasion, beauty and diversity.

I attended and could not believe the buzz, energy and amazing fashion on display, we also got to exclusively see nine new Rankin fashion potraits which were displayed throughout the huge gallery. The event took over 3 floors and also in attendance were Erin O'Connor and Lorraine Candy, editor of ELLE.

We were grooving to the all female DJ line-up and listened to Work it Girls with Josey Rebelle and Radi Dadi, playing an eclectic mix of sounds :-)

We also got puled into an impromptu catwalk with this legendary Rankin subject whose picture was also on display.

Unfortunately you are not allowed to take pictures inside the gallery but here are some pics from the official facebook page for the event and of course.. I managed to smile for a few including one with the lovely Anna Wintour...lol!

London College of Fashion MA show

Amazing times were had at the LCF MA show at the beautiful Victoria & Albert Museum for the London College of Fashion's MA Graduate Fashion Show!

I attend every year as I guest lecture at the college and the LCF have been really supportive of the book project I am working on. I am always increasingly impressed and excited by the collections. My lovely friend Gillian did an amazing job coordinating a breathtaking event which saw the likes of Harold Tillman, David Downton, Grayson Perry, Lulu Guinness and Jo Wood plus many more journey to the stunning Raphael Gallery in the V&A.

I was fortunate enough to enjoy a stunning view of some really unique and strong yet commercially viable collections.

My pictures were a bit of a blur as the lights were so bright and I was caught up in what I was seeing but you can check out the good overview by Grazia about the show here:

Fashion Business Club, first meeting in 2011

Running up to the fashion weeks, slowly easing into schedule I was excited to attend the first meeting for the Fashion Business Club in 2011. I’m a member of the club and enjoyed this first of the year meeting. This time around superstar designer Markus Lupfer was interviewed by FBC board member and Editor of VOGUE.COM, Dolly Jones. The occasion was also the FBC’s 5th anniversary!

Markus’ beautiful sequinned creations have been worn by the likes of Rihanna, Beyonce, Olivia Palermo and Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meister. Markus’ work across the board from collaborations with high streets brands to work with luxury labels reflects his flexible design style and definite entrepreneurial spirit. Markus discussed his journey through the fashion industry alongside what he thought defined a labels creative direction and also
exclusively revealed his plans to debut a film in the near future as he currently does not do runway shows.

Chance Meetings in London

Talk about chance meetings in London!

I headed to the GFK fundraising fashion show in association with Chase and Marie Curie@ my home away from home Somerset House. I often work from there and will be basing more of the work I do there this year and next. It was very cool because alongside patients, staff and models you had Marie Curie nurses, unsung heroes, walking the runway too and they got the biggest cheers.

Heading home, passed the Tiffany Tuck Box and sat down to rest my feet, started talking to the lady on my right, who happened to not only know Craig Lawrence , who I posted about @2pm this afternoon!!!, but she was also waiting for him at that moment, she also happened to have a pair of the golden gloves I loved IN HER BAG!!!

Apparently they are a brand favourite!! Talk about timing!

Other bonuses were the lovely goodie bags which included delicious chocolates and Caprice lingerie! Caprice was a special guest at the show and really down to earth and sweet. I love chance meetings in London.

I had a brilliant time at the London College of Fashion yesterday!

You can find out more information about the event by clicking the image above :-) As you may know, the London College of Fashion is THE place for fashion-lovers, students and future fashion stars. I have always found their events to be innovative, exciting and full of really great contacts. If you recall I attended an amazing David Downton launch at the Dorchester, organised by LCF too! I sat with two other amazing inspirtaional women and had a talk with students about our journey through the fashion industry, our experience and so much more.

Rene Gruau Private View @ The Mayor Gallery, London W1

A lovely night out in London attending fashion illustrator Rene Gruau's Private View at the Mayor Gallery in W1. It was an absolutely beautiful evening and I wondered up with the lovely Emma Jarman.Fashion Illustration Gallery promotes and sells the works of fashion illustrators and the private viewing was for their International Textiles exhibition.

Stunning works we viewed whilst sipping champagne in a beautiful and warm gallery and some fantastic pictures courtesy of George Ramsey. Also in attendance were Illustrator Daisy De Villeneuve and her mother the model Jan De Villeneuve, Michael Kostiff, owner of the iconic 80's store "World", renowned fashion illustrator David Downton, Fashion illustrator Tanya Ling, artist Duggie Fields, Storm model Evangeline Ling and her sister the DJ and blogger Bip Ling.

Following the David Downton book launch I attended a few weeks ago I have been bitten by the fashion illustration bug! I've been sketching and a long way to go until I reach these mind-blowing heights but practice makes perfect eh?

I also bumped into Ascot hat designer Tracey Rose again, in another one of her beautiful creations!

I can start by saying pale pink makes me feel feminine and soft, red makes me feel powerful and brown makes me feel quite conservative.

David Downton's Book launch

What fate!!! Just a few weeks ago I tweeted about Vogue's awesome homepage on fashion illustrators including the brilliantly talented David Downton here http://twitpic.com/2dnmoe

Well the London College of Fashion (who I do some guest lecturing spots for) recently hosted a launch party for his beautiful book, Masters of Fashion Illustration, which I attended and thoroughly enjoyed! Also in attendance were Jade Parfitt, Erin O'Connor, Jasmine Guinness and Marie Helvin. David was as lovely as he is talented and signed my book with a star!

On a separate note the beautiful Erin O'Connor was a light as always. She has done some amazing work for the fashion industry from her model sanctuary to her work devising a fashion wheat sandwich! Vogue homepage

I logged onto the Vogue website today and saw this awesome homepage. Not only awesome because of but the spotlight on Fashion Illustration which I am currently. Fashion Illustrators are some of the industry's unsung heroes and I really like the work of Hiroshi Tanabe and David Downtown right now. His work is beautiful, elegant and balances complexity with an understated nature so so so skillfully! The 2008 'Valli' is also a favourite....

The Cover...the buying decision

Dear All,

Having seen a fire hot magazine cover as featured below with ARISE magazine (edited by the lovely Helen Jennings who I travelled to Gambia with in 2009), I wanted to share some of my favourite magazine covers and why.

The cover is so important and is undeniably the deal clencher. I often wonder by magazine kiosks and see a great deal of sameness and deja-vu...but..then there are the few covers that just pop and stand out. Reducing visual complexity and delivering something fresh and head-turning is no easy feat.

When I worked as Fashion Editor of The Talent Magazine our cover featured About a Boy star Nicholas Hoult and teen supermodel Jessica Pain.

How could we not overload on info whilst conveying just how much talent was crammed in?

We went with simplicity.

I personally prefer when a cover shows some level of experimentation....but how far you can push this creative need for the new depends on the genre and space shelf you occupy. I am undecided as per whether my favourite covers feature known or unknown faces.

Long time

Dear All,

It has been a long time since I last blogged but as many of you know I have been busy launching my official website , travelling, working on new projects and all that jazz!

It is not so much that blogs are hard to maintain, although they are, it is also that I wanted to take some time to decide what I wanted this blog to say and do. I discovered that actually as much as it is for sharing updates about what I do, it's also about talking to fellow bloggers and followers and discussing the issues affecting us all designers, stylists, photographers, models, buyers and so on within the fashion industry, creatively, socially, financially and emotionally and then work collaboratively with others to see what can be done.

Common denominators over the past few months have been inspiration, travel, new experiences, love and fashion...of course!

I got some perspective.....

I never want to be a selfish fashion designer, so I am a fashion entrepreneur, check my wiki! It's about sharing resources, information and contacts because I have found that is always a win-win. By mentoring students and guest lecturing at the London College of Fashiong and writing guide books I hope my actions speak louder than my words. The first two books were the first step when it came to creating a knowledge share platform and there is more to come including my third book which I am really excited about. The content is just going to be so unique!

I'm tweeting away about absolutely everything going on project wise and all in between. After a trip to Chicago for the TN2020 summit I was reinspired by some social media gurus to get my bases covered with twitter. Newsletters and more I started over 3 years ago but Twitter is a whole new ball game. Tweetups, Twestivals.....sorry what?!

I laughed out loud when I got a message about Samata X, asking when I would be bringing her back. Answer is who knows although likelihood is she will be back in one form or another because I have ideas for her constantly.. But she is still alive on MySpace so say hi to her! Plus she is....me. I’ll end with Mottainai, a Japanese phrase I picked up this year which means what a waste. It actually refers to a shameful waste natural resources and the increasing need to recycle, reduce and reuse but I use it in reference to talent and say recycle your ability to bounce back, reduce hesitation and doubt, and reuse (constantly) your talent. I am looking forward to getting back into the full swing of blogging!

Duke Of Essex Polo Trophy

Industry shindigs and fun

Touching base to share some images with you - still working on my collection but I could not miss some of these key events on the fashion calendar so..... I attended the London College of Fashion Week Awards and the Graduate Fashion Week Awards - both of which were very inspirational work from some really talented designers!

The Graduate Fashion Week was launched in 1991 and is a forum to showcase the very best BA Graduate fashion design talent in the UK. The prestigious Gala Show and Awards presentation, which I attended alongside Terry Mansfield, one of my mentors and Chairman of Graduate Fashion Week. The event took place on the penultimate night and was hosted by fashion expert and television presenter Caryn Franklin. Also in attendance were the likes of Harold Tilman (Zandra Rhodes, Claudia Schiffer, Giles Deacon, Matthew Williamson and Erin O'Conor.

I definitely have an eye for talent as my show favourite, Myrto Samou , ended up winning the River Island Gold Award and the Womenswear prize! I spotted her in the bathroom before the show had even started and had no idea her collection was in the show but fell in love with the dress she was wearing, and told her as such, only to see her go on to win the ultimate award! I think the reason that her collection was so loveable was because it successfully combined elements of high fashion design with a commerical marketability - in essence the clothing was beautiful and practical and wearable!

In these economic times it is becoming increasingly important to create collections with a wide customer appeal, wearable fabrics and a flattering colour palette. Above is Mryto at the end of the awards after being announced as the winner! It was nice to just sit and enjoy the show for once with no work to be done after, aside from writing this up course!

I saw some great 'ones to watch' also such as Hannah Taylor whose collection brought smiles to all of our faces with her quirky woollen jumpers complete with clown and fox faces on batwing jumpers.

My favourite model of the moment Aine Rose Campbell He was a regular fixture on the runway shows that I watched, looking stunning as always.

I met Aine during Alternative Fashion Week and she is literally blowing up right now.

The Big Issue

I just wanted to let you know that my Big Issue interview is now out so all of my London based readers, be sure to get a copy! For those who do not know, The Big Issue is distributed to a network of street vendors, who buy it for 70 pence and sell for £1.50, thereby earning 80 pence per copy. The organisation currently supports over 2500 homeless and vulnerably housed people across the country.

Hi All

I hope all is well with you. I am busy sketching now as my S/S 10 collection is in full bloom! The ideas are swirling around in my head and I am going deep into my creative mind frame. I got a few emails from you asking me what helps me to focus on creating.... so I thought I would share some of my secrets with you :-)

I have a really eclectic taste in music and this variety is really helpful when I am trying to create a collection that tells a story. Imagining the model, the music and the setting helps me bring a whole collection together. I remember reading that Karl Lagerfeld once said, 'A collection is not just one basic idea...' and I completely agree. I catch a thought or an inspiration in a number of ways but I have to put it down, draw it and work it out. Things like the music or the imagery of the show in my mind helps that along.

I also really try to avoid looking at other designer’s collections as I don't want to subconsciously pick up someone else's ideas! So I try to go underground and just get my Fashion news updates from Vogue.com. I even avoid the west end!

I also look for faces of my label...women I could imagine in my clothing and they come in all shapes and sizes..... my latest muse is the model Gaye MacDonald. She is pictured here and I think she is a stunner!

Now this is how you wear a coat.....lol

If I get a creative block I look at the work of some of my favourite designers including the unbeatable Versace.... dresses that dreams are made of....

This beautiful number was part of the Versace AW09 collection and I really love the blue.....

I am sure every designer has their own process but this helps me to get things moving....

Fashion parties

Dear All,

I have been a busy bee but having fun more than working for a little while....I went to two really great parties on Tuesday so wanted to share some of the highlights of the night with you all!

Stunning violinist Analiza Ching invited me to the Vicinitee VIP Launch Party, sponsored by FTV which was a blast. We were treated to a show by Charles Svingholm, champagne reception and canapes, a live PA from and a great time! Plus outside were parked some DB9s courtesy of Team Modena!

I absolutely love this photo I took...it really captures the mood of the evening

After that (yes the same evening) I scooted off to the Monsieur Baron show at Kitts, Chelsea to see my girl Anna strut her stuff and I also caught up with model Gus. The show was also a lot of fun with a more intimate relaxed vibe. The shirts were really cool too with lots of cool detail such as moveable bones and anti-scratch labels. The self-professed ‘business shirts’ label of London clearly has a following in the City of London as the turnout was very impressive.

The shock of the evening was that women modelled the menswear brand complete with suspenders, fishnet tights, trilby and saxophones.

Lots of fun for a change....it has not just been hard work you see as I know lots of you think all I do is work....although, having said that you can see my full write up on leading fashion website Fashion Capital shortly....ha ha ha! I could not resist doing a little bit of work (when you are having fun it does not feel like work).

My B'day and Fashion Weeks

Hi All,

I hope all is well!

First off, wanted to say thank you for the b'day wishes. I had a great one and have added some pics below for you to enjoy. ..my sister made an amazing cake which was absolutely delicious...legendary in fact!

Another year and I am very positive about the time ahead as the year has begun so well so far! Friends, family and cake....

Fashion news...

To start off, I am a finalist for the Dods & Scottish Widows Women in Public Life Awards 2009 under the category of 'Entrepreneur of the Year 2009'. I am very excited and you can see that here: http://www.womeninpubliclifeawards.co.uk/shortlist_info.asp?id=33

The awards ceremony will be held in early March and I will post the result up here first off...wish me luck! I would love to win but I am equally happy that I am nominated....

Fashion Weeks

I am getting very very excited about Fashion Weeks counting down...I am going to be enjoying the shows for London, New York and catching the last 2 days of Milan. The fashion weeks are without a doubt the busiest and most stressful time for most fashion designer so I am quite relieved that I am not showing a collection this time around, but I can empathise completely with my designer friends. I hope everyone is on track with their work for February and I am looking forward to doing some write-ups and seeing the upcoming styles and trends for Fall 2009.

I am also looking forward to trying to catch the opening of the new Matthew Williamson store in NYC next week. My friend and supporter Simon Whitehouse (you may recall his name as he contributed to my guide book series on the topic of Marketing). As Creative Director of Matthew Williamson he is an expert in the field and it will be good to catch up with him in NYC....time permitting!

On that note....how amazing is this MW dress?!! I love the colours and style...
I have been wetting my appetite by viewing some of the collection images on the one and only Vogue.com. and FashionCapital.co.uk to keep the excitement at an all time high...I just keep stunning images from different runway shows...t is inspiring and exciting.

I have been out and about a tiny bit, started getting in to the red carpet thang. ...

I went to the 6th annual Screen Nation Awards 2009 on Saturday and made a lovely dress for it. A you can see from the photos I got back into my beading and detailing again so that was a lot of fun...minus the finger pricks! Happy New Year

Dear All,

I wanted wish you all a Happy New Year! I have been silent as for once I have been enjoying myself, partying and taking my time with work. It's a new year and I hope you have all set yourself some inspirational goals and have started with a bang....this year my resolutions are to work harder, play harder and be even more positive!

2008 was a pretty action packed year for me, lots of ups and downs but I have no regrets and wishing for nothing but forward movement. I hope that 2009 will be as blessed with new adventures, friends and travels. Importantly, I hope I remain inspired so that I can create stunning, amazing pieces of clothing....

I have just fallen in love with an artist called Lady Gaga, some of you may have heard of her already...I think her style is so unique and love her video and song 'Just Dance'...check her out and let me know what you think!

Dear All,

I hope you are all well! Just wanted to post some words ahead of the year end....I have been a busy bee...taking time to go to a few events after a year of so much hard work! I am officially on holiday now!

I can't believe 2008 is coming to an end....roll in 2009 with all of the hopes, dreams and goals that come along with it! I have been thinking about what the new year means for Samata's Muse....whether I will take a break from designing or focus on one-off pieces or pursue a collection....who knows!
Hopefully it will involve more exciting fashion events, more time with good friends and family and even more inspiration!

Enterprise Week launches....

Dear All,

I hope all is well! I am working away on promoting the book. I have also been on the speaking circuit - I took part in an event called 4 Entrepreneurs yesterday and at the London College of Fashion this week - and planning my next year as 2008 is coming to an end.....

I have not blogged for a while as I have been working on a few projects and speeches I am doing.

I am also getting quite involved with work at the London College of Fashion which is good fun! I thought I would steal a moment to keep you all up to speed. You can watch the video of one of my recent talks above (part 2, 3 and 4 are after).

Dear all!

I hope you are all having a glorious weekend! I just wanted to post a little blog to say once again, thank you, for all the support I have received with what I am trying to do. It definitely can get stressful and tiring but I am striving to live the dream and do what I love....so I can not complain!

I sometimes wonder if things would be easier for me if I were older, richer, had studied Fashion Design or even Music ....but I have to remind myself that there is no point thinking that way and that everything happens for a reason. I really do believe that everyone is given the tools they need in life to success in their desired field. You just have to persevere.....

There is a saying 'Anything worth having is worth working hard for'. I live by that.
I hope my newsletters bring you something and that you enjoy reading them because I really enjoy writing them. It is totally therapeutic! I certainly love your email reponses and comments on my MySpace or to my inbox. Make sure you comment on here too so we can get some lively threads started.

I would also love to hear from you all more about what you are trying to do and how it is going for you. Any advice I can offer I am all ears :-)
